UNA Community Gardens is a partnership initiative between the University of British Columbia (UBC), the University Neighbourhoods Association (UNA), and residents of the UBC community. Starting with one garden — Hawthorn Garden — in 2008, and with new garden sites expected to come on stream in future planting seasons, UNA Community Gardens connect residents to the land, to the community, and to each other.
UNA Community Gardens are organized and managed by a volunteer committee of six UNA residents. In addition to managing the plot allocation process and ongoing operations for Hawthorn Garden, the committee is actively working to secure additional space to meet the high demand for plots among the university-area population. In the meantime, Hawthorn Garden is thriving.
